The posters displayed at the North Vancouver Bicycle Master Plan Meeting are now available for viewing on the internet. The main page is on the Urban Systems website. The most important part is the map showing the plan that categorizes them by cost and priority.
What I like:
- That they are doing something and overall the plan seems to make sense,
- The proposal for a new cycling/pedestrian crossing over Lynn Creek between Cotton and Keith. This is a very good idea. (Personally I think Hunter might be a better location than Crowne, but either would be excellent)
What I don't like:
- It seems that some minor routes that could be done to link things together better were missed. A specific example is Orwell Street from Phibbs Exchange parking lot to Hunter Street (and a hopeful future Fern Street overpass that is better for cyclists). I think this may have been as a result of the methodology used to objectively classify the routes.
- There is no information on what specifically is being done to call the proposed routes as bicycle routes. I would like to see a lot more detailed plan. Hopefully this is to come. I think putting lines on paper is the easy part. Making these lines into useable bicycle routes is where the challenge comes in.
- Very little discussion on the existing routes. Many of the existing routes are deficient (not very well signed, insufficient width or intersection problems). The only thing specifically indicated is Lynn Valley Road is shown as both a "Existing Bicycle Route" and an expensive medium priority to upgrade. (Personally I don't think it has any business being called a bicycle route at all currently)
