Dave Perfitt, City of North Vancouver, Responds

Dave Perfitt is a candidate for Council in the City of North Vancouver.

1. What type of bicycle riding do you do and how often?

For most of my life I have commuted by bike to and from work. Last year my work moved closer to my home and I now walk. These days I use my bike for shopping and attending meetings. I am a Board Member of the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition. I have been a transportational cycling proponent for 14 years.

2. What do you think your municipality has done well in cycling and where do you feel improvements are needed?

The City of North Vancouver (CNV) has been fairly progressive in bike route development, providing end-of-trip facilities, and supporting transportational cycling encouragement programmes. Presently there are bike lanes along the Low Level Route e.g. Cotton Road and Low Level Road. Future bike lanes are planned along Esplanade Street and Marine Drive, in conjunction with property developments. New work places are required to provide showers. There are the C-media bike racks with advertising in the shopping areas. The City collects a licensing fee for these racks and those monies are used to promote more bicycling. Both City and District donated funds to Bike to Work Week (an encouragement event) in 2005. Future improvements are needed:

a)to build the Casano Drive/ Loutet Park Overpass, which is a greenway proposal linking the Lonsdale Town Centre to the Lynn Valley Town Centre and;
b)install bike lockers in key areas and;
c) ensure the continued development of the planned bike lanes and Green Neck-lass.

3. Do you feel more money should be spent on cycling programs and what do you feel the priorities for spending should be?

Yes we should spend more and the priority should be high! There are many modern day urban problems that can be addressed with more people, cycling more often. They are inactive living, greenhouse gas production, air pollution, traffic congestion, and excessive land use for parking. Please visit www.perfitt.ca for more of my platform.
