Maureen McKeon Holmes, District of North Vancouver, Responds

Maureen McKeon Holmes is current councillor in the District of North Vancouver and is a Mayoral candidate.

1. What type of bicycle riding do you do and how often?

For many years I was an avid bicyclist. I would ride almost everywhere including riding into the winter months with my hats and gloves on to fend off the cold. My personal interest in bicycling was sidelined once I was run over by a transport truck. (He was anxious to make a right turn.) I spent over a year recovering from the wheel crushing my leg.)

2. What do you think your municipality has done well in cycling and where do you feel improvements are needed?

The District of North Vancouver has a bicycle committee that reports directly to Council (rather than to the Transportation Committee) and has a mandate to look at ways to improve roads and access to bicycling.

3. Do you feel more money should be spent on cycling programs and what do you feel the priorities for spending should be?

We should be ensuring that roads have safe bicycle lanes and that residents are encouraged to ride to work and other activities. I am espeically concerned for the safety of children and would encourage increased safety programs for youth.
