Sam Schechter, City of North Vancouver, RespondsSam Schechter is a candidate for Council in the City of North Vancouver. 1. What type of bicycle riding do you do and how often? Unfortunately, about half the bicycling I do is on an exercise bike, but when I do get out doors, I enjoy cycling along the trails in North Vancouver, mostly for casual enjoyment and light exercise, but occasionally to work up a sweat as well. I would commute with my bicycle, but that would take an enormous amount of time, and so I rely on public transit instead. 2. What do you think your municipality has done well in cycling and where do you feel improvements are needed? I think North Vancouver has taken numerous positive steps in terms of improving access and visibility of bicycle routes and encouraging people to make use of their bicycle for commuting and exercise. In the future, I look forward to the City's Master Bicycle Plan including solutions for both east/west and north/south bicycle lanes or routes that will increase the livability of our City and encourage this sustainable mode of transportation. 3. Do you feel more money should be spent on cycling programs and what do you feel the priorities for spending should be? Yes, I think that the City can contribute more to developing the ideas laid out above. Our City is blessed to have an active corps of volunteers who are helping us to plan such initiatives, and I know that ensuring proper and adequate resources are necessary are an important part of reaching our goals.
