Salim Kaderali, District of North Vancouver, Responds

Salim Kaderali is a candidate for Council in the District of North Vancouver.

1. What type of bicycle riding do you do and how often?

Our family owns three bicycles and during the fine summer days we enjoy cycling Stanley Park 10k circuit and the new English Bay path. We also cycle around our home and go to play tennis, as well as visit the park. I work in Richmond so cycling to work is not an option.

2. What do you think your municipality has done well in cycling and where do you feel improvements are needed?

Compared to other municipalities we have done little to nothing. Richmond has good cycle lanes on the main streets. We have not even managed to mediate the concerns of the mountain bikers and concerned residents. Bicycles are here to stay, and should be encouraged, not only are they good for health and recreation, but we have the opportunity to develop mountain biking as an excellent tourist destination, an area we need a better look into.

3. Do you feel more money should be spent on cycling programs and what do you feel the priorities for spending should be?

The municipal tax increase during the last five years has been over 20%, I don't believe there is an appetite for more spending. But the province and federal government boast surplus. If we can delineate what our needs are and what we want we could entice them into participation; it's when preparedness meets opportunity.
