Janice Harris, District of North Vancouver, RespondsJanice Harris is currently the mayor of Norh Vancouver District. She is running for council. 1. What type of bicycle riding do you do and how often? Until recently I rode a peugot 10 speed (the gear shift levers snapped!) 2. What do you think your municipality has done well in cycling and where do you feel improvements are needed? The District began to seriously commit to cycling improvements about ten years ago after the adoption of a bicycling master plan (which is currently being updated in concert with the City of North Vancouver.) The first significant project was the bicycle/pedestrian bridge over Lynn Creek although I would be remiss not to mention the dedicated bicycle lane that was incorporated into the Mt. Seymour Parkway prior to that. I have consistently supported incorporating bicycling improvements in all new developments and redevelopments, such as widening the outer lane on Lynn Valley Road for improved cycling safety for example. There is room for a great deal more improvement for the cycling public, particularly at both bridge heads and along or adjacent to Marine Drive. 3. Do you feel more money should be spent on cycling programs and what do you feel the priorities for spending should be? Once the new Joint City and District Bicycling Master Plan is adopted and the priorities for cycling infrastructure identified, both municipalities will be in an excellent position to apply for provincial and federal bicycling infrastructure grants.
