Columbia St. is an important link for the Central Valley Greenway to
complete the loop back to the BC Parkway. It is also part of a bigger plan to revitalize Columbia St and transform it from an unattractive commuter thoroughfare with decaying businesses to a revitalized urban space with attractive pedestrian and cyclist ammenities and local traffic whose destination is the local business (and not the quickest route through town).

This is possibly one of the few remaining "road diets" still on the agenda in the lower mainland (going from currently 4 lanes to 2 lanes + turning lanes + bike lanes).

Although I admit that I don't understand their business model, this project is not wildly supported by many of the local businesses who seem to prefer the status quo, or perhaps a few banners and shrubs, but no reduction in through-vehicle capacity. The latter would make it very difficult for Columbia St. to comfortably support cycle lanes.

So if you support interregional cycling connections, and perhaps would like to see a successful road diet somewhere in the lower mainland (so we can have a positive local example), please consider attending this open house.

It is very easy to get to. The New West police station is at the corner of 6th St. and Columbia, and is equidistant from either Columbia or NewWestminster SkyTrain stations. There are bike racks out front, or they usually don't mind if you leave your bike in the lobby... in full view of the open house room.
