referenceRegional Maps and Cycling InformationThere are a number of different cycling maps available both on the internet and on paper. Translink Translink makes a regional map that can be bought as a full size fold-up map from a number of different locations. The map is also available on line either in small sections covering each region or as a large file for each side of the map. You can get it from the Translink Webpage. In general this map is not as up to date or as accurate as the maps that the municipality creates. Translink also has information about the other cycling programs they have such as using bikes on Transit and bicycle lockers. Ministry of Transportation The Ministry of Transportation is responsible for the highways in BC. They maintain a map of highways where bicycles are not permitted. They also have information about the George Massey Tunnel Shuttlebus. Contact information for the Lower Mainland District. Richmond Cycling Maps and InformationThe City of Richmond has quite a bit of cycling information on their cycling page. Being relatively flat and spread out they are able to have some of the best cycling facilities in the Lower Mainland. This includes a pdf map of the on-street designated cycling routes as well as a map showing the extensive parks and trails facilities. They then suggest connecting these together to make some scenic bicyle routes Provincial Reference InformationThere are a number of websites put out by the provincial government that have useful information about cycling. The BC Coroners Office had a study called "Deaths Of Cyclists in British Columbia" which is an interesting if gruesome read. It is available on the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute website.
Cycling BCCycling BC is the provincial governing body for the sport of cycling in British Columbia. We represent the full range of disciplines including Road, Track & Cyclo-cross, Mountain Biking and BMX. Cycling BC is a not-for-profit association registered under the BC Societies Act. Their website is www.cycling.bc.ca
Vancouver Maps and InformationVancouver has a very nice map of all of the bicycle routes of Vancouver that folds up to a credit card size. This map is widely available for free from most bike stores and many other locations. This map is highly recommended. It is also available on-line on along with a description of the bikeways at the City of Vancouver webpage. The City of Vancouver's cycling pages have quite a bit of information about bicycle routes and plans for Vancouver. It should also be noted that in Vancouver all new buildings built since 1995 are required to be provided with secure bicycle parking, showers for those working in the building. You can find out more details on the parking by-law.
North Vancouver Maps and cycling informationThe district of North Vancouver has a very good website for their mapping at gis.dnv.org. There is an on-line bicycle map in pdf format. Unfortunately it only includes bicycle routes in the District of North Vancouver and many of these bicycle routes are actually not the best route to take. (For example the map shows Arbourlynn as the bike route from Second Narrows up to Lynn Valley, but actually Hoskins Road is generally a better route for cycling.) For anyone cycling in North Vancouver the contour maps (West and East) are an invaluable asset when planning your routes. These maps also have the trails which is often very useful in finding an alternate route. Just watch out some of the trails have stairs or can be quite rough. The City of North Vancouver's GIS website does not show bicycle routes on the layers of the map. There is some useful map of the Green Necklace trails at greennecklace.org, this is really only useful for recreational family riding, but it is a very nice interactive map. The GVRD website has a map of the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, which is a very popular place for recreational cyclists with over 10km of paved trails. Burnaby Maps and informationThe City of Burnaby has some information on Trails and Cycling page. A version of the current bicycle map available on in graphic format or pdf format. They also have some information about their 5 year plan for expanding bicyle routes in Burnaby. |
